Lebara Play

Lebara Play™ is a new entertainment service, launched by Lebara®, the universal brand for the world's migrant community. Lebara Play™ has launched with over 150 TV channels and 3,000 movies in HD and SD quality. Users can watch TV channels, both live and time-shifted, and video-on-demand through PCs, iOS and Android devices and Lebara’s branded set-top-boxes.

Lebara Play™ is based on SPB TV's turnkey OTT TV solution, which was customised to Lebara®'s technical and business requirements. Lebara Play™ provides users with an opportunity to watch TV channels, both live and time-shifted, and video-on-demand through PCs, iOS and Android devices and Lebara’s branded set-top-boxes. Lebara Play™ has launched with over 150 TV channels and 3,000 movies in HD and SD quality. SPB TV uses several certified DRM-systems to secure the content on various platforms.

One of the major tasks set by the Lebara Play™ project was the worldwide distribution of Indian, Turkish, African and other regional TV channels. In order to receive the channel live streams, SPB TV has connected to regional broadcasters that downlink the channels from satellites. Video streams are processed through the SPB TV Media Platform and deployed on Amazon AWS’ cloud platform, allowing for a rapid and scalable rollout.

Lebara Play™ set-top boxes use the SPB TV Genie UI Engine, which leverages the boxes’ powerful hardware capabilities to combine a fluid and intuitive interface design with outstanding performance.

SPB TV’s platform solution is packed with valuable business tools. For Lebara®, SPB TV has facilitated implementation of a hybrid business model that addresses a need to provide access not only to a large number of TV channels free of charge, supported by targeted ads, but also to premium DRM-protected content available by subscription.

SPB TV’s customized solution for the Lebara Play™ service also features:

  • A content management system for user experience customization;
  • An advanced EPG that can incorporate full information about shows and movies, as provided by third-party companies;
  • A comprehensive reporting service;
  • A CRM (customer relationship management) system;
  • A quality monitoring system that controls the video delivery process in real time.

Lebara Play™ is targeted at migrant communities, with the service now available in Europe and providing access to a vast selection of Tamil, Turkish, West African English, West African French, Hindi, Bengali and Punjabi content. As the service expands, Lebara® plans to offer content in additional languages to serve a broader range of migrant communities.
